Allen writes his wife Jane from Cincinnati while serving as colonel of Kentucky militia during the War of 1812. He briefly notes farm matters and relates news of the defeats U.S. forces have suffered, especially the fall of Detroit due to William Hull's actions and the massacre at Chicago, and how these have affected the army. Also, discusses Martin Hardin, William Wells and the situation at Fort Wayne.

William Hull (1753-1825) was a lawyer and a soldier. He served in the Revolutionary War and afterwards in the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Brigadier-General. In 1805 he was appointed Governor of the Michigan Territory. In 1812 he was court-martialed and cashiered from the Army because of the failure of his campaign into Canada against the British. A Kentucky lawyer and legislator, Allen served, with Henry Clay, as a defense attorney for Aaron Burr in the Burr Conspiracy trial held in Frankfort. During the War of 1812, Allen served as colonel in the 1st Rifle regiment of the Kentucky militia.
